Videos taken on smartphones are usually bigger in size due to less-than-optimal compression. Good video compression algorithms take up significant CPU/GPU power and in an attempt to keep everything on the phone as smooth and real-time as possible, manufacturers apply a fast and basic compression algorithm on the raw input video so that we can view the video as soon as it is taken.

Modern smartphones use the H.264 video codec for compression. Note: Video codecs are different from video containers (such as mp4, mkv, avi). While H.264 is the current industry standard for most applications, there are several encoding options within H.264 which are optimized for speed over quality. Videos taken on smartphones use such options, which do not exploit the full capabilities of the H.264 codec. Our aim now is to compress this video further using the H.264 format itself, but with a slower, quality oriented set of options. Note that in the ideal scenario, we would have liked to apply this set of options on the raw video input from the camera but that’s not possible so we are forced to worked with an already compressed video.


Download the Media Converter app from the Google Play store. Media Converter – Apps on Google PlayChoose the video file you want to compress. It even allows you to choose multiple files and do a batch compress.In the following screen, click on “Expert mode” and choose the mp4(h264,aac) preset. This tells the app to encode the video using the H.264 codec, AAC audio codec and put these together in the MP4 video container.





The rest of the options for adjusting audio and video quality are self-explanatory. If you want to experiment on them, I suggest using small videos with fine text in them, such as a video of a computer screen for testing purposes. The loss in quality, if any, will be easily visible in such cases. For a normal use case, leave everything as it is.One important option is the Video bitrate. If enabled, this sets the maximum bitrate of the video. The higher the resolution of the video, greater is the required bitrate. The more movement there is in the video, higher is the bitrate required to encode it without any distortions. So if you know that the video has very little motion involved, you can try keeping a lower bitrate which results in a smaller size video.




Change the directory and output name if you want and Convert! Now kick back and relax. This process will take time.


Even on close inspection, one will not be able to distinguish the drop in quality but the size drops drastically! Enjoy!

Main purpose: to convert any video to mp4 or 3gp, understandable to Android devices and resize under the screen resolution of devices. You can also extract the mp3 audio from the video.


Supports: MPEG4, h264, mp3, aac, ogg (vorbis and theora) and many other formats (the list can be found in the program). Optipization for x86 и ARMv7(cortex-a8).


Requirements: Processor ARMv7 and above or x86.
